UWIC achieves top marks for second year running
Wednesday 26th July 2006

The University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC) has produced the highest examination marks in the country for the second year in a row.

Catherine Bradford beat off competition from every other participant in the UK studying for the Advanced Food Safety Course to achieve the highest set of marks, to equal UWIC’s success in the same course last year.

The 46-year-old of Laleston, Bridgend, recently travelled to London to be presented with her award by the Royal Society for the Promotion of Health.

UWIC’s reputation for achieving top marks in the part-time 10-week course is becoming unparalleled after student Lisa Creed was awarded with the same honour last year.

Catherine said: “I remember when our tutor Denise Worsfold told us that the year before one of her students had got this prize and I thought that would be very good. When I found out I got it I was quite taken aback - it hit me that it is quite an achievement.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the course and did more than most as I didn’t have to do it, I wanted to do it.”

Catherine decided to do the course after running her own business for 20 years, and is now teaching basic food hygiene to adults with learning difficulties.

Denise Worsfold, UWIC Food Industry Centre training manager, said: “Catherine’s success will serve as inspiration to others. We congratulate her on this achievement”.
